About VAT

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax applied to goods and services in many countries. The rate varies by country and sometimes by product category, which is why the calculator includes a custom rate option. Enter amounts in the currency you use; the tool applies percentages and does not convert currencies.

Formulas

To add VAT to a net amount: VAT = net × rate / 100 and gross = net + VAT.

To remove VAT from a gross total: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100) and VAT = gross − net.

Results are rounded to two decimals, as commonly used in invoicing.

Rates and limits

The 20%, 10% and 5% presets are examples used in some markets, not universal legal rates. Rates, exemptions and product rules vary by country, so verify the applicable rate with your local tax authority.

For European Union rates, see the European Commission VAT rate information. Reviewed on August 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT rates are available?

The calculator includes 20%, 10%, and 5% presets plus a custom field so you can enter any rate used in your country.

How is VAT calculated?

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate and add it to the net. To remove VAT from a gross total, divide the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the net; the difference is the VAT amount.

Can I use commas as decimal separators?

Yes. Both 12,50 and 12.50 are accepted and interpreted as the same amount.

Are amounts sent to a server?

The calculation runs in your browser, and the amounts you enter are not sent to the tool's server.
