How are words counted?
A word is any sequence of characters separated by whitespace. This tool counts in any language: it splits on whitespace, so hello world is 2 words and can't is 1.
Characters include everything you type (letters, spaces, punctuation, line breaks). The "no spaces" row subtracts exactly the spaces and line breaks.
Reading time estimate
The calculation assumes an average speed of 200 words per minute, a standard value for adults reading silently. It is only an estimate: your real pace depends on the type of text and whether you are skimming or reading closely.
